Your Work Computer is Not Private

By Dave Lorenzo An employee should have no reasonable expectation of privacy while using the computer system at work. According to the 2005 Electronic Monitoring & Surveillance Survey conducted by the American Management Association (AMA) and The ePolicy Institute, 76% of the companies surveyed monitor workers web site connections. Many companies use special software to block connections to inappropriate sites. In the latest survey 65% of companies reported blocking some sites. This is a 27% increase since 2001. The greatest concern for most employers is lost productivity. Certainly a worker who spends an average of over two hours on adult web sites could find a more productive use for his time. A close second to Internet monitoring is the monitoring of content in e-mail. In the latest survey, 55% of the employers reported reviewing workers e-mail. While most businesses are less concerned with your note to your buddies about where to watch the big game, they are concerned that e-mail and instant messaging creates a permanent record of an interaction. These records can be subpoenaed in the event of a lawsuit. In fact, 13% of the firms in the survey reported legal activity that was initiated as a result of an e-mail or instant message. Companies routinely archive e-mail for their own protection. Many firms employ software that checks for key words such as the title of a secret project. Some companies scan out-bound documents for words such as resume or phrases like references or salary history. In some cases it may be difficult for a company to discipline an employee for sending such documents however it does provide some insight into their activity during the work-day. It can also provide some clues into potential areas prone to key defections. Your employers right to monitor your use of company equipment does not begin and end with the computer. The number of employers who monitor the amount of time employees spend on the phone and track the numbers called has jumped to 51%, up from 9% in 2001. While improper use of the telephone is more difficult to prove, long phone calls to numbers that are obviously not work-related should be avoided at all costs. The bottom line is that more employers are taking advantage of the technology that exists to track the use of company assets. Make sure your read your companies policies on e-mail, Internet and telephone usage carefully. Violation of these policy can be hazardous to your employment. Reverse Phone Directory - Do Not Pay For Any Reverse Phone Directory Until You Try This

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Adam_Bauthues]Adam Bauthues The reasons why you might need to utilize the power of a reverse phone directory are many. You or one of your loved ones may be getting crank calls from an unlisted number and are having trouble finding out who it is. You may need to learn more about a future business partner and all you have is the cell number they gave you. A reverse phone directory can solve all of these issues right away and give you peace of mind, but you may want to try a couple things first BEFORE spending your hard earned money. I have been using reverse phone directory services and reverse records ever since their inception. There is nothing like real data to work with, especially when it comes to the protection of my family. They are always priority number one. For me, a reverse phone directory is completely worth the small fee for unlimited access, because I never know when I may need to use it. For others who are just looking for a lost classmate or a loved one, and are not generally interested in anything else, there are other ways to go about the search and that cost nothing. I have used several other reverse phone directory sites with much success, and depending on what it is you need to accomplish, the following sites may help you for free. I have no connection with the sites below so all I can offer is advice on how to use them. 1) [http://www.anywho.com/rl.html]Any Who Reverse Phone Directory - This free reverse phone directory will not allow you to look up cell phone numbers or unlisted numbers, but it is great at finding personal and business names and addresses. If you need name and address in the US for any number in question, this is a great way to find it. 2)White Pages Reverse Phone Directory - This one works about the same as the first, but it found some people I looked for that Any Who did not. I have no reason why that is, but you may find use in it as well. Again, no cell phone lookup is available here. 3) [http://www.infospace.com/home/white-pages/reverse-phone]Info Space Reverse Phone Directory - This one offers a few different reverse searches including a reverse email and address search. I tried to reverse search a few cell phone numbers but all I got was irrelevant information so I am guessing it does not provide this either. You should give it a try though and see for yourself! 4) [http://www.daplus.us/]DA Plus Reverse Phone Directory- This one is very helpful and offers alot of information for free too. You can reverse search names, business name and phone number but cell numbers are not provided. I am sure there are many more but these are the main ones I used before I purchased a much more advanced reverse phone directory system to conduct my searches. Cell phone searches will always cost some money and I have yet to find a free reverse phone directory for cell phones. Keep in mind that all of the above services are extremely limited, and like with any free service, they are providing it to try and get you to upgrade into a paid service, and usually the more expensive one at that. Don’t cave in right away and order an expensive search from one of these free services above. For even though a paid reverse phone directory is worth it, you can get a much better and more complete service for half the price that these big companies charge. You just need to be diligent. Adam Bauthues has a passion and a love for privacy, security, and tech-related niche topics. His most recent website reviews and discusses [http://www.reversecellphonesearch.org/reverse-phone-directory/]reverse phone directory technologies, and provides reviews, hints, tips, and tricks for conducting your own searches and staying safe and protected in our ever-expanding digital world. The History of Poker

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Adel_Awwad]Adel Awwad Poker is a card game with many theories about its history and many debates about its origins. Poker may have been around for more than ten centuries in the form of other card games. It is believed that the word ‘poker’ was derived from an underworld slang word ‘poke’ - this was a term used for pickpockets. When card-sharks cheated somebody out of their money they boasted about having ‘poked’ that person. An ‘r’ was added to the term ‘poke’ so that the sharks could refer to what they were doing in front of their victims, who would be none the wiser! While there seems to be no clear ancestor to the game, for the United States at least, Poker has a definite history. Poker began in New Orleans when the French settlers introduced poque in the 18th century. This was a card game which involved betting and bluffing and there are many game historians who believe that this is where poker originates. There have been many modifications to the game, including ’stud poker’, the ‘draw’ and the ’straight’ which became popular during the Civil War. Slowly ‘poker’, as the game became known, spread to other states via steamboats, wagons and trains. Poker initially began with a deck of 20 cards, and eventually evolved into a deck of 32 cards. During the 1830s a 52 card deck became the norm. In 1875 the joker was introduced as a wild card. At the end of the Civil War poker reached the towns of the Old West. It wasn’t long before they realized that easy money could be made from playing (or perhaps cheating at) poker. Legends were created involving the potent mixture of saloons, poker and guns. Brave gamblers in the old west towns of Dodge City and Deadwood could be found taking their chances with their backs to the walls and their guns at the ready. By the end of the 19th century, gambling and poker had spread throughout both the United States and the world. American states and cities began to see an opportunity for raising money. They taxed the gambling dens to raise money for their communities. Nowadays casinos have taken over from the saloons and the game is strictly regulated by gambling laws. It is played more than any other card game in the world and has even become a sporting event, offering very rich pickings for the serious player. Finally, there is no doubt that poker has a rich and interesting history. Online Poker Bots - Threat or Not?

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Harrison_Elliot]Harrison Elliot Introduction Online games from chess and backgammon to 1st person shooters are rife with people who use computer assisted play or computer robots - even when there is no money at stake. With the appropriate program any player is able to play at a world championship level ruining the game for honest players. What makes online poker different, given that there are huge amounts of money at stake? In this article I will explain how I developed a poker bot and what I learnt from this experience. My conclusion is that although it is possible to construct a poker playing bot the threat from poker bots to the online poker player is extremely small to non-existent. “Games” Theory For interest and college courses I had previously written computer playing programs or bots for games including chess, Connect 4, Othello, backgammon, bridge and various others. For games such as Connect 4, Othello, chess and backgammon where all players have the same available information about the game state, the theory on how to construct expert bots is well known. Deep search techniques, looking many moves ahead, are used for games such as Othello and chess. Recently (10 years ago) it was discovered neural networks could be taught to play backgammon better than almost any human player. Games such as poker and bridge contain hidden information where the players can see their own hand but not that of the other players. The published theory behind writing expert computer bots for these incomplete information games is decades behind the complete information games and there are doubts techniques will be developed so that computers can play at expert or world championship level. At present the best techniques for these incomplete information games seem to involve some form of simulation and opponent modelling. Anatomy of An Online Poker Bot There are 3 basics parts to a poker bot: 1) Data Gathering - observing the game state and history 2) Data Processing - using the information from the data gathered to determine whether to fold, call or raise. 3) Output - Pressing the appropriate button on the poker room client. My Poker Bot My program was written in early 2004 with Microsoft .Net C++ and was developed to play at one online room only. For the technically minded the program relied heavily on MFC and the Win32 API. 1) Data Gathering My bot gathered information about game state and history from online poker tables by taking repeated screenshots and analysing the image. To begin with I just observed games, taking screenshots automatically so I could gather data on the position of the cards, chips and button. By determining the color of a certain few pixels I was able to gather all this information about the state of the game. Eventually I was able to gather data from multiple poker tables (4 at a time) by repeatedly bringing each window to the foreground and taking a screenshot. From this screenshot I was able to determine my cards, board cards, button position, who was left in the hand, pot size and player bet sizes. 2) Data processing This is the component that eventually bought my poker bot project to an end, unable to develop a strong enough strategy to win consistently. I tried various rules based, neural net and simulation techniques. At best my bot was able to make a very small profit at $1/2 and $2/$4 limit holdem, but nowhere near the thousands of dollars a week I envisioned earning when I started the project. In the end it just wasnt worth my time to continue to put resources into developing my poker bot further. 3) Output This was the easiest component to write. This involved programmatically moving the mouse pointer to the appropriate screen co-ordinates and then sending a mouse down/mouse up command signalling a left-click. I did give consideration to adding the ability for the bot to use chat but never progressed that far. Conclusion Although you might run into a poker playing bot whilst playing online the odds are it plays very poorly. At any level of play you are much more likely to run into an expert human player than an expert computer player. #18 Arizona St. Sun Devils Preview

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Matt_Fargo]Matt Fargo Fall camps are under way and the regular season will be here soon so that means getting an early jump on the 2006 NCAA football season. Knowing the teams now will save you time and Matt Fargo is here to help you get a grasp of what to expect this upcoming year. We go from worst to first in this 2006 College Football Preview. #18 Arizona St. Sun Devils 7-5 SU; 6-6 ATS Fargos Take The Sun Devils have been to three bowl games in the five years Dirk Koetter has been head coach but none of them have been very glamorous and that needs to change. The offense has been spectacular in all of those years but its been the defense that has held Arizona St. back. After finishing 48th in total defense in 2004, the Sun Devils plummeted to 114th last year and lost three games where the offense put up at least 31 points. With such an explosive offense, losing four games by at least 10 points is inexcusable. Immediate help is needed and it looks at though help may be on the way. Quarterback controversies occurred at the beginning of fall camp but those have since disappeared so the Sun Devils have one goal and that is to become more competitive in the Pac Ten. If the defense can improve to somewhere near its 2004 numbers, that goal is very attainable. Returning Starters on Offense 8 The quarterback situation was unsettled through the spring and into the fall but that is no longer the case. Sophomore Rudy Carpenter has been named the starter and that prompted senior Sam Keller to leave school and transfer to Nebraska. Carpenter was amazing filling in for the injured Keller as he completed over 68 percent of his passes while throwing 17 touchdowns and just two interceptions. Now the task at hand is to find a replacement for All-Pac Ten receiver Derek Hagan. Junior Rudy Burgess looks like he is up for the challenge after grabbing 59 balls last year. Tight end Zach Miller is one of the best in the country at his position and is a preseason All-American. The offensive line returns pretty much intact while tailback Keegan Herring rushed for 870 yards as a freshman. Basically, all systems go. Returning Starters on Defense 5 After allowing just 24 ppg though its first four games, the defense imploded. It allowed 35 points in the second half to USC and it was all downhill from there. Easily the worst defense in the conference, Arizona St. comes into this season ranked as the fifth best in the Pac Ten. That is due to a defensive line that is ranked right behind USC and for good reason. Three transfers, Loren Howard (Northwestern), Tranell Morant (Florida) and Michael Marquardt (BYU) will man the line and the rushing defense that ranked 89th in the country could be one of the best. Linebackers are still a concern with the departure of Dale Robinson and Jamar Williams but the secondary should improve immensely. Two starters are back at safety and while the corners need to be replaced, anything can be better than last year after finishing 112th in passing defense. Schedule Facing Northern Arizona in the opener should show us how the defense has come along even though it is against a 1-AA opponent. The real test comes the following week at home against Nevada who will also have one of the best offenses in the nation. The schedule really stiffens after that with a trip to Colorado followed by three games against the other three contenders in the conference California, Oregon and USC. Making matters worse is that the games against the Bears and Trojans are away from Sun Devils Stadium. After that four-game stretch, the rest of the slate will feel like a cakewalk with four wins on deck followed by the final two games against UCLA and at improved Arizona. You can bet on If nothing else, Arizona St. games will be entertaining. The offense is going to score a ton of points and even though the defense is upgraded, there are still problems. Koetter hopes he made the right choice with Carpenter as his quarterback and if anything should go wrong, there is no help waiting in the wings. At least Keller will start next season in Nebraska. Arizona St. is just 4-13 ATS as a road underdog since Koetter took over back in 2001 and a lot of that failure has to do with the defense that couldnt stop anyone. Whether or not that changes this season remains to be seen but the Sun Devils will be in that role in their first three road games of the season. Arizona St. has covered just six of its last 20 conference road games as well. Matt Fargo is a documented member of the Professional Handicappers League. Fall Into Promotional Products - Spring Ahead Of The Competition

By Linda Hansen Close your eyes. Imagine crisp, cool breezes and red leaves dancing along the side of the streets and in the trees. Imagine hot apple cider and the smell of spicy pumpkin bread baking. Imagine bright orange promotional magnets and your company logo branded on pennants floating through the football stands. Now, open your eyes. Its the Fall which means its time to start your promotional product campaign. Industry trends show that many companies start their promotional product campaigns during the Fall due to their growth and strength during this time. This coincides with back to school advertising and the fund raising season. It represents a time where consumers actively look for new products and new promotions. It also represents a time when companies start to brand themselves before the holiday season. Fall branding benefits a company because promotional products serve as a lucrative means to raise awareness, increase an already positive perception and, most importantly, generate more funds in your company. Starting a promotional product campaign in the Fall gets you in front of the consumers early so you can remain at the tops of minds throughout the year. Consumers spend more starting in the Fall and lasting until after the holiday season. Therefore, starting advertising and promotions accompanied with good premiums increases your chances of getting a big chunk of Fall and Winter consumer spending. In an article Fall Promotions Bring Seasoned Spending, Dave Spangenberg, director of business development at Carlson Craft Business Solutions, says Clients are either preparing for the new year or are trying to find ways to energize fall sales with their remaining budget dollarsad specialty items are usually welcomed to meet these needs. Ad specialty items, such as promotional products, coupled with print ads have the potential to bolster higher profits than print ads alone. It gives the active shoppers a reason and rewards for both remembering and using your company. They also generate a loyal and happy client base because people love free stuff. Starting in the Fall creates all of these positive results early, thus invigorating your upcoming year. Taking into consideration all of this, contemplate the limitless options for using promotional products as a part of your campaign in the Fall. Promotional magnets can serve a double purpose when used during this season. Print your name and logo along with the fall schedule of the local sports team. Richard Krauth, vice president of Rainbow printing, in the Fall Promotions Bring Seasoned Spending, said, Promotional magnets are long-standing favorites with business-to-business and business-to-consumer companies. Unlike most other advertising media, magnets keep advertisers messages visible for an extended period of time. Design a new thank you card to prepare yourself for upcoming business. In the accounting business? Take the Fall to stock up on presentation folders and report cover inventory for the new year. Fall campaigns allow your company to stay ahead of the competition, earn the pre-holiday profits and stay on budget with your campaign. As Karuth said in the last part of the article, As advertising budgets are cut, more and more companies are looking for low-cost, high-impact ways to allocate advertising dollarspromotional products continue to fit that bill. The low-cost and effectiveness of promotional products make them a must in any campaign, especially an early branding and awareness campaign. Taking the Plunge Meeting Your Online Match (Part 1)

By Croydon J Hounslow So you made a success of it, you found a match online and now youre meeting up? Congratulations! The hardest part of the journey is over and now the fun begins. But remember that first impressions do count and if youre not careful, you could still mess things up at this stage. With this in mind, here are my top tips for your first face-to-face: Firstly, make sure you choose the right venue; this may seem obvious but the choice of location can really make or break a date. Ideally you should choose somewhere thats public, with people around but where you can still hold a conversation. Meeting at your house or your dates house is a definite no-no, this not only sends the wrong signals for a first date, but could potentially be unsafe however well you think you know someone online, they could still turn out to be a real world psychopath. Even worse, they could be really boring and fail to take the hint when its time to leave! Cinemas are often regarded as good venues for dates, but think about it youre stuck for up to three hours with your date in a place where you cant talk or even look at each other properly; is that really the best environment to make an impression? Likewise the main dancefloor at Ministry of Sound is not ideal for an involved conversation. Of course, this is not a definitive rule, you might have got chatting in the first place through a shared love of films or dance music, but for the majority of meetings a small intimate caf or quiet pub provides the perfect environment for a little light conversation, some flirting and plenty of eye contact for that all important personal connection that is the key to a successful date. Time of day can be an important factor for a meeting as well. Think about what kind of date you want to have. What do you know about your match already? Is he or she an all-night party animal or an afternoon tea on the lawn type? Studies show that our intentions in online dating are perceived differently depending on the time of day we choose to interact, and this also applies to real world dating. If youre serious about looking for a long term partner and you think this match could possibly be the one, you should consider meeting earlier in the afternoon or evening. This gives the impression that you are a more sober and dependable character, and that your intentions are honest. If youre more into playing the field, or are aiming for a more casual and fun relationship then meeting up later in the evening should be fine. Of course the time of day and venue have to also work together; cafs, art galleries, perhaps a visit to the aquarium are all classic afternoon or early evening activities, leaving time for you to continue to a bar or restaurant later if things are going particularly well. Late night dates are better suited to more upbeat or raucous activities such as gigs, ten-pin bowling or maybe a spot of salsa dancing.
