How to Pick a Team Member
By Mike Tasner Jr. As a recent college graduate, I had my fair share of experience in picking team members. I was in exactly 22 groups during my four years in college, with the final group culminating as a large senior project. As I sat back and reflected on all of those groups I often thought, boy I wish I would have known the qualities I preferred when picking some of these team members. The top five criteria I now use in picking group members is as follows: availability, contribution, cooperation, reliability and team player. I take all of these into account before I decide if this person will work well on my team. First, availability- I want to know is this person going to be tough to schedule meetings with, or are they flexible? Contribution- lets face it, we all know that some people like to breeze by without making any type of effort. Cooperation- is the person playing devils advocate 24/7? You need people that wont be arguing all the time. Reliability- this one is key! If you are giving the person a key role in the project will they pull thru? Lastly and the most important- is the person a team player? Are they going to work together to form synergy or work on their own? As you go through college take these criteria into account before randomly selecting someone to be a part of your team. Working well in a group has become a hot topic in recruiting for jobs! Employers want people who are going to work well as a team, not people who are going to run off on their own and think they can get everything done. Dont get me wrong, some employers want go-getters, but most want team players! Always remember five minds will be better than one!
